TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE Single Vehicle Crash Kills New Orleans Man in Plaquemines Parish Plaquemines – Yesterday evening at approximately 6:00 pm, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash on La. 23 southbound near Buras in Plaquemines Parish. The crash claimed the life of Joseph Chevis of New Orleans. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2009 Chevrolet Suburban operated by Chevis (B/M 64) was traveling southbound on La. 23 near mile marker 23. Chevis, for reasons under investigation, traveled off of the left portion of the roadway, reentered the roadway, and eventually traveled off of the right portion of the roadway. The Suburban continued through a fence and struck an embankment before coming to rest in front of a private residence. Chevis suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Plaquemines Parish Coroner’s Office. Chevis was not restrained and impairment is not suspected; however, a blood sample was collected for a toxicological analysis. Those results are pending as this crash remains under investigation. Troopers witness firsthand the remarkable difference the use of a seat belt makes in reducing injuries and fatalities in crashes. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
