TROOP B NEWS RELEASE July 21, 2017 Lack of Seat Belt Causes Driver Ejection in Fatal US 90 Crash St. Charles Parish – This morning, at approximately 5:30 am, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash on US 90 east at Carlon Drive. The crash claimed the life of 61 year old Karen Duran of Des Allemands, LA. Preliminary investigation revealed that Duran was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado and was making a left turn onto US 90 east from the opening of the median. As the Chevrolet was turning into the left lane, it was struck on the rear side by a 2002 Infinity I35, driven by 35 year old Garland Cottingham of Prairieville, LA. The impact caused the Chevrolet to overturn in the median. Duran was ejected from the vehicle due to lack of seat belt usage and was pronounced dead on the scene. Cottingham suffered minor injuries and was also unrestrained at the time of the crash. Impairment is not suspected and the crash remains under investigation. The majority of motorists who die in crashes are not wearing a seat belt. Despite this fact, some people still choose not to take the 3 seconds needed to buckle a seat belt. Louisiana law requires motorists to wear a seat belt in every seating position, front seat and back seat, day and night. Wearing a seat belt is the single most effective thing vehicle occupants can do to minimize the risk of injury in the event of a crash. Motorists are encouraged to make the smart choice and to always Buckle Up! Contact Information: | |||
