| TROOP B NEWS RELEASE August 4, 2017 Driver Killed in Early Morning St. John Parish Crash on I-10 ST. JOHN PARISH – Shortly after 5:30 am on August 4, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 10 westbound near LA Hwy 3188 in St. John the Baptist Parish. The crash took the life of 30 year old Fernando V. Maldonado, who was from Honduras but living in Gretna. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Maldonado was driving a 2005 Infiniti G35 westbound on I-10 in heavy rain. For reasons still under investigation, Maldonado’s Infiniti ran off the roadway to the right and struck a tree. Maldonado was properly restrained at the time of the crash, but sustained serious injuries and was trapped in the vehicle. Upon being extricated by St. John Parish Fire Services, he was transported to Ochsner Health Center – River Parishes in Laplace. He was later transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans where he succumbed to his injuries. Impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash, but standard toxicology results are pending. While not all crashes are survivable, Louisiana State Troopers would like to remind motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, avoiding all distractions, and obeying all traffic laws can often mean the difference between life and death.
