Man Arrested after Firing Weapon in Central Business District

NEW ORLEANS Shortly after 1:30 am on August 12, 2017, Troopers responded to reports of shots being fired in the Central Business District. Troopers subsequently determined that 27 year old Joseph David III of Zachary, LA discharged rounds from a semi-automatic pistol at a vehicle and a hotel lobby.

The initial investigation by the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations has revealed that David was involved in an altercation in the French Quarter earlier in the evening. He returned to his hotel on Common St. and left a short time later. He began walking and pointing a pistol at various vehicles and individuals in his vicinity. He continued to walk west on Camp St., and at the intersection of Camp St. and Gravier St. he pointed and fired the pistol at a passing vehicle, striking the vehicle numerous times. The driver was not injured and managed to flee the area. As David continued walking, he fired more shots toward the lobby entrance of a hotel. Those rounds struck another vehicle and the lobby entrance doors.

When Troopers responded, they encountered David in a parking garage. David was still armed with the pistol and Troopers fired at David. David subsequently surrendered to Troopers. There were no injuries during the shooting. David was subsequently arrested for Aggravated Assault upon a Peace Officer (2 counts), Aggravated Assault with a Firearm, Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property (3 counts), and booked into the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility Louisiana State Police Detectives are conducting the follow-up investigation, and the case is on-going.
