TROOP B NEWS RELEASE
April 28, 2017
High Speed is a Factor in Airline Highway Fatal Motorcycle Crash

Jefferson Parish This morning, shortly after 1:30 am, Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating a fatal crash on US 61 (Airline Highway) at North Laurel Street. The crash claimed the life of 38 year old Jamal Walker of Boutte, LA.

The initial investigation revealed that Walker was operating a 2004 Suzuki motorcycle south on US 61 at a high rate of speed. A 2015 Chrysler 200, driven by 20 year old Jayedon Hobson of New Orleans, LA, was stopped on N. Laurel St. at its intersection with US 61. Hobson made a left turn onto US 61 south and the Suzuki impacted the right side of the Chrysler. The Suzuki traveled off the road to the right and Walker was pronounced dead on the scene. There were five occupants in the Chrysler, two of which were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The other three occupants were not injured.

Speed is a factor in the crash. Impairment is not suspected and Hobson voluntarily submitted to a breath test which no detectable alcohol was found in his system. Toxicology results for Walker are pending an autopsy. The crash remains under investigation.

Nationally, according to NHSTA, speeding is a factor in one-third of all fatal crashes. Speeding is defined as speed too fast for conditions or in excess of the posted speed limit. Speed limits are implemented in the best interest of public safety. Numerous factors are taken into consideration when deciding on a speed limit. Some of those include lane and shoulder width, vertical alignment, superelevation and curve radius. Troopers witness firsthand the devastating effects in motor vehicle crashes caused by speeding. Please be a responsible driver, obey speed limits, drive sober, buckle up and avoid distractions.
