Honduran Man Killed in Nine Vehicle Crash that Halted Traffic on I-10

Jefferson Parish This morning, at approximately 5:00 am, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash on I-10 west between the Transcontinental overpass and Veterans Blvd. The crash involved nine vehicles and claimed the life of 67 year old Isidro Orellana of Honduras.

The on-scene evidence and Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that a 2006 Saturn Ion, driven by 29 year old Lance Cozzens of New Orleans, LA was disabled in the left lane. Prior to the Saturn becoming disabled, Cozzens was involved in a near crash while attempting to change lanes. He overcorrected the Saturn and lost control, coming to rest in the left lane. A 2016 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by 36 year old Brejan Ramsey of New Orleans, LA, was in the left lane and stopped behind the Saturn. A 2008 Ford Focus was traveling in the left lane, followed by a 2006 HINO 32 foot box truck. Both vehicles were approaching the stopped Chevrolet. The Ford, driven by 47 year old Pascual M. Guerrero of Houston, TX, began to slow down. The box truck, driven by 59 year old Theado Cooper of New Orleans, LA, was unable to slow down and swerved toward the left shoulder, impacting the Ford on the rear driver’s side. It then completely entered the left shoulder, past the Chevrolet and Cooper steered the truck toward the right. It impacted the Saturn in the right rear, which in turn catapulted the box truck onto its left side and it slid into the left center, center and right lanes. Simultaneously, the Ford impacted the rear of the Chevrolet which pushed it into the left center lane and it was then impacted by a 2013 Mack 18 wheeler, driven by 44 year old Beau Fernandez of Hammond, LA.

Isidro Orellana was the rear seat passenger in the Ford and was not restrained at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the Ford, Guerrero, and front seat passenger 31 year old Osman Orellana of Honduras, sustained minor injuries and were transported to University Medical Center. Impairment is not suspected and the crash remains under investigation. Criminal charges may be forthcoming.

Several other vehicles were involved in the crash as they were attempting to maneuver around the crash in the left and left center lanes. The following vehicles sustained minor damage and there were no injuries to any drivers: 2013 Nissan Quest, 2005 CVGC 18 Wheeler, 2004 Acura ATL and a 2009 Peterbilt 18 Wheeler.

While not all crashes are survivable, simply buckling up greatly increases your chances of surviving a crash. Please, speak to your loved ones about the importance of always wearing a seatbelt, never driving impaired and avoiding distractions. The advice you share, could be lifesaving.
