Airline Highway Crash Claims the Life of 88 Year Old Destrehan Man

Jefferson Parish – This morning, shortly before 11:00 am, Louisiana State Police Troop B was notified of a fatal crash on US 61 north at North Cumberland Street. The crash involved two vehicles and claimed the life of 88 year old Theodore Miestchovich of Destrehan, LA.

The initial investigation indicated that Miestchovich was driving a 2002 Buick Century south on North Cumberland Street. The Buick entered the lanes of US 61north and was impacted in the left lane by a 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, driven by 28 year old Landry Everson of Metairie, LA. After impact, the Buick spun around toward the right side of US 61 and struck two unoccupied parked vehicles. It then traveled over the median, across the south bound lanes of US 61 and came to rest off the roadway. Miestchovich was wearing a seat belt and pronounced dead on the scene. Everson and front seat passenger, 20 year old Davianna Stokes of LaPlace, LA, were not wearing seat belts and transported to University Medical Center with moderate injuries.

Impairment is not suspected. Toxicology tests will be completed on Mieschovich following and autopsy and Everson submitted to a blood test which will be conducted by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
