TROOP N NEWS RELEASE September 13, 2017 “Operation Summer Heat” Yields Over 200 Arrests and 71 Illegal Weapon Seizures Orleans Parish – During the summer months, Louisiana State Police conducted a criminal enforcement detail dubbed, “Operation Summer Heat.” The operation took place over a nearly 8 week period in various districts across New Orleans. Troopers assigned to the operation worked in conjunction with the New Orleans Police Department in this intensive enforcement effort aimed at decreasing criminal activity. Troopers focused on arresting individuals carrying illegal weapons, recovering stolen vehicles, and curbing narcotics trafficking. Operation “Summer Heat” began July 5, 2017 and concluded on September 3, 2017. Troopers assigned to “Operation Summer Heat” came from various troop areas across the state. The operation consisted of 12 Troopers that worked closely with NOPD District Commanders and Officers each night to ascertain specific high crime areas or hot zones. Louisiana State Police Detectives assigned to the Bureau of Investigations also participated in the operation, focusing their efforts on narcotics trafficking. Through the duration of “Operation Summer Heat,” Troopers made 209 arrests which resulted in 270 criminal charges and 140 drug charges. Troopers seized 71 illegally possessed weapons and recovered 26 stolen vehicles. Over $58,500.00 worth of narcotics was seized, which included heroin, cocaine, crack cocaine, marijuana, hashish, methamphetamine, and various other drugs. The partnership displayed between Troopers and NOPD during “Operation Summer Heat” is an excellent example of how coordinated law enforcement efforts can benefit the communities we serve. Partnerships between law enforcement agencies have proved that sharing resources and personnel are key to ridding our streets of crime. It also improves police presence in neighborhoods that continue to experience high crime rates.
