High Speed Causes Fatal Crash on I-10

Jefferson Parish – This morning, shortly before 4:00 am, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash on I-10 at Bonnabel Blvd. The crash claimed the life of 28 year old Christopher J. Thomas of Kenner, LA.

The initial investigation indicates that Thomas was driving a 2005 Ford Mustang on I-10 east at Bonnabel Blvd. at a high rate of speed. Thomas lost control of the vehicle and struck the cement guard rail on the right side of the roadway. After striking the guard rail, the Mustang crossed five lanes of travel and struck the cement guard rail on the left side of the roadway. Thomas was transported to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Thomas was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and impairment is unknown. Toxicology tests are pending an autopsy. The crash remains under investigation.

Nationally, according to NHSTA, speeding is a factor in one-third of all fatal crashes. Speeding is defined as speed too fast for conditions or in excess of the posted speed limit. Speed limits are implemented in the best interest of public safety. Numerous factors are taken into consideration when deciding on a speed limit. Some of those include lane and shoulder width, vertical alignment, superelevation and curve radius. Troopers witness firsthand the devastating effects in motor vehicle crashes caused by speeding. Please be a responsible driver, obey speed limits, drive sober, buckle up and avoid distractions.
