Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Vehicle on I-10 in East Baton Rouge Parish

Baton Rouge, LA Shortly after 3:00 am on January 22, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash involving a pedestrian on Interstate 10 eastbound east of Highland Rd. in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash took the life of 20 year old Brittany Morgan of Baton Rouge, LA.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Morgan was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 when she began experiencing mechanical issues and pulled her vehicle into the median. At the same time, 23 year old Jarvea Baptiste of Laplace, LA was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 in a 2010 Toyota Camry. For unknown reasons, Morgan walked into the roadway and was struck by Baptiste’s vehicle.

Morgan sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office. Baptiste was properly restrained and was not injured. It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash but a toxicology sample will be taken from both Morgan and Baptiste for analysis.

Motorist should always avoid stopping in the median and travel lanes of interstate systems and multiple lane highways. If you are traveling and began to experience mechanical issues or an emergency, you should pull your vehicle onto the shoulder of the roadway. While stopped on the shoulder, you should activate you emergency flashers and maintain a safe distance from travel lanes. Motorists should also remember that state law requires you to move over whenever you approach a vehicle on the shoulder with its emergency lights activated. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.

Both motorists and pedestrians are urged to call *LSP (*577) to reach the nearest LSP Troop location to report hazardous roadway conditions or request assistance if needed.
