TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE
May 9, 2016
Reserve Man Dead Following Crash on I-10

St. Charles ParishThis morning, shortly after 12:00 am, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash on I-10 west at mile post 213.2. The crash claimed the life of 28 year old Felton Lewis of Reserve, LA.

Troopers’ initial investigation indicated that Lewis was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu west on I-10 in the left lane approaching traffic that was stopped due to a previous crash at mile post 212. The Malibu struck the rear of a 2013 Chevrolet Traverse, driven by Melva Barabin (age 49) of LaPlace, LA, which pushed the Traverse into the rear of a 2006 Jeep Commander. The Commander was driven by Rakeedra Woolridge (age 31) of Ponchatoula, LA. The Commander was then pushed into the rear of a 2016 Jeep Compass, driven by Lauren Jimerson (age 25) of Belle Chasse, LA.

Lewis and his front seat passenger, Jarvis Cosy (age 21), were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries. All other drivers also suffered minor injuries. The investigating Trooper was conducting the follow up investigation at the hospital, when Lewis began complaining of chest pain. He was pronounced deceased a short time later. Lewis was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and impairment is not suspected. A toxicology test will be performed following an autopsy. The crash remains under investigation.

The majority of motorists who die in crashes are not wearing a seat belt. Despite this fact, some people still choose not to take the 3 seconds needed to buckle a seat belt. Louisiana law requires motorists to wear a seat belt in every seating position, front seat and back seat, day and night. Wearing a seat belt is the most effective thing vehicle occupants can do to minimize the risk of injury in the event of a crash. Motorists are encouraged to make the smart choice and to always wear their seat belt.
