TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE
July 14, 2016
Marrero Man Killed in High Speed Crash in I-10

Jefferson Parish – This morning, shortly before 3:00 am, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash on I-10 east near Causeway Boulevard. The crash claimed the life of 30 year old Anthony D. Garcia of Marrero, LA.

The initial investigation revealed that Garcia was driving a 2008 Nissan Altima east on I-10 at a high rate of speed in the center lane. The Nissan struck the rear of a 2010 Peterbilt tractor/trailer that was traveling in the center lane on I-10 east, just west of Causeway Boulevard. The Peterbilt was driven by 27 year old, Desmond Hooper of St. James, LA. Garcia was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead on the scene. Hooper sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Impairment is not suspected however, Hooper voluntarily submitted to a blood test and results are pending testing at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Toxicology tests are pending an autopsy on Garcia. The crash remains under investigation.

Troopers would like to remind motorists that seat belt usage is required by Louisiana law for all occupants of a vehicle. The primary purpose of a seat belt is to keep the occupant in the seating position which prevents ejection. A seat belt also protects the internal organs, brain and spinal cord by spreading the crash forces across the strongest bones in the body and allowing the body to decelerate at a slower rate. Please ensure that all occupants are properly buckled, this will limit injuries sustained in a motor vehicle crash.

Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway. Speeding also extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle and can lead to a more serious collision in cases where the vehicle strikes another object. Troopers encourage motorists to observe the speed limit and to drive at a speed that is safe for prevailing road and weather conditions. Please drive safely!
