TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE March 3, 2016 Failure to Yield Causes Fatal Crash in St. Charles Parish St. Charles Parish – Yesterday afternoon, at approximately 3:30 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash involving two vehicles on US 90 west at Carlon Drive. The crash claimed the life of 88 year old Alfred Tregre of Des Allemands, LA. Preliminary investigation revealed that Tregre was driving a 2007 Honda Accord and was stopped on Carlon Drive at US 90. The Honda entered the intersection, in an attempt to turn east on US 90, and was struck on the driver’s side by a 2014 Ford Mustang, driven by 18 year old Christian Sontoyo of Raceland, LA. Tregre was pronounced dead on the scene. Sontoyo was transported to St. Charles General Hospital, along with an 11 year old front seat passenger, both suffered minor injuries. The front seat passenger in the Honda, 81 year old Fannie Tregre, was transported to Ochsner Main Campus with moderate injuries. All occupants were properly seat belted during the crash. Impairment is not suspected, however toxicology results are pending an autopsy on Tregre. The crash remains under investigation. Troopers remind motorists to always look and make sure it is clear before pulling into traffic or across intersections. Always watch vehicles as they approach and gauge the distance they are covering as they approach. Never try and “make it” across when it is unsafe to do so. Keep distractions to a minimum and keep your focus on the road. It only takes a fraction of a second for a crash to occur. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
