Two Separate Fatal Crashes Overnight in Jefferson Parish


Jefferson ParishOvernight, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated two separate fatal crashes in Jefferson Parish, both involving motorcycles.

The first crash occurred shortly before 11:00 pm on US 90 at US 90B. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2016 Suzuki DR650 motorcycle, driven by Joey M. Mayeux (age 54) of Avondale, LA, was traveling east on US 90 in the left lane. For reasons still under investigation, the Suzuki traveled across the median and into the path of a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer, driven by Randy Jones (age 56) of Marrero, LA. The Chevrolet was traveling west on US 90 in the left lane. Mayeux was ejected from the Suzuki and pronounced dead on the scene, he was wearing a DOT approved helmet. Jones was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Impairment is unknown, however Jones submitted to a blood test and the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab will perform the toxicology analysis. An autopsy will be conducted on Mayeux and a toxicology is pending. The crash remains under investigation.

The second crash occurred shortly after 12:00 am on US 90 (Jefferson Highway) at Claiborne Court. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2015 Victory Cross Country motorcycle, driven by James Newsom (age 35) of New Orleans, LA, was traveling east on US 90 in the center lane. Crystal M. Ferguson (age 32) of Atlanta, GA was walking across US 90 and was struck by the motorcycle in the center lane. Ferguson was transported to University Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center where she was later pronounced deceased. Newsom was wearing a DOT approved helmet and suffered minor injuries. Impairment is suspected on the part of Ferguson and a toxicology test is pending an autopsy. Newsom voluntarily submitted to a breath test. The crash remains under investigation.
