TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE
December 16, 2016
Failure to Yield Causes Fatal Crash in St. John the Baptist Parish

St. John the Baptist ParishYesterday evening, at approximately 5:30 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B was notified of a fatal crash on US 61 at LA 53. The crash involved two vehicles and claimed the life of 24 year old Danielle Georgel of Laplace, LA.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Georgel was the front seat passenger in a 2002 Ford Taurus, driven by 24 year old Tylas Bailey of Vacherie, LA. The Ford was traveling in the right lane on US 61 south, approaching LA 53. A 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche, driven by 17 year old Christian Moses of Gonzales, LA, was traveling on US 61 north and made a left turn onto LA 53. As the Chevrolet was crossing the southbound lanes of US 61, it was impacted on the passenger side by the Ford. Georgel was transported to River Parishes Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. Bailey was airlifted to University Medical Center with moderate injuries. Moses suffered minor injuries and was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Georgel and Bailey were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Moses was properly restrained. Impairment is not suspected from either driver, but Troopers obtained a blood sample from both and toxicology tests are pending with the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. The crash remains under investigation and criminal charges are pending.

Troopers remind motorists to always look and make sure it is clear before pulling into traffic or across intersections. Always watch vehicles as they approach and gauge the distance they are covering as they approach. Never try and “make it” across when it is unsafe to do so. Keep distractions to a minimum and keep your focus on the road. It only takes a fraction of a second for a crash to occur. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
