TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE August 13, 2016 Impairment, Speed and Lack of Seat Belt Cause Jefferson Parish Fatal Crash Jefferson Parish – Early this morning, shortly after 4:30 am, Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a fatal crash on the elevated portion of US 90B west near Maple Avenue. The crash involved one vehicle and claimed the life of 19 year old Jonathan Torres of Marrero, LA. The initial investigation indicated that Torres was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Express van west on US 90B in the right lane at a high rate of speed. The Chevrolet was quickly approaching another vehicle that was traveling in the right lane and Torres swerved to the right to avoid impacting the other vehicle. The Chevrolet impacted the concrete barrier wall and a light pole. Torres was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected during the crash, he was pronounced dead on the scene. Impairment is suspected as a factor and a toxicology test will be conducted following an autopsy. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
