TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE August 26, 2016 Harvey Man Killed on Westbank Expressway Jefferson Parish – This morning, at approximately 7:40 am, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash on the elevated portion of US 90B west near Ames Boulevard. The crash claimed the life of 45 year old Tony Mitchell. Preliminary investigation revealed that Mitchell was driving a 2001 Ford F150 and began to experience mechanical problems. Mitchell stopped on the partial left shoulder and partial left lane. He exited his vehicle and began to flag oncoming traffic around his vehicle. A 2012 Honda Civic, driven by 35 year old Jennifer Williams of Waggaman, LA, was traveling in the left lane and observed Mitchell. Williams stopped her vehicle in the left lane and was preparing to move into the center lane when she was impacted from the rear by a 2011 Chrysler 200. The Chrysler was driven by 23 year old Corutney Slugher of New Orleans, LA. Following the first impact, the Honda was pushed forward and stuck Mitchell. Mitchell was thrown over the left guard rail and fell approximately 40 feet to the ground level. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Williams and her 1 year old son suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital. Williams was wearing a seat belt and her son was properly restrained in a child seat. Slugher was also wearing a seat belt and received minor injuries, she was also transported to a local hospital. Troopers believe the speed of the Chrysler is a factor of the crash. Impairment is not suspected. The crash remains under investigation and criminal charges are pending. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway. Speeding also extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle and can lead to a more serious collision in cases where the vehicle strikes another object. Troopers encourage motorists to observe the speed limit and to drive at a speed that is safe for prevailing road and weather conditions. Wearing seat belts greatly reduce injuries in motor vehicle crashes. Louisiana law requires the use of seat belts in every seating position. Please drive safely, adhere to all speed limits, drive sober, avoid distractions and always buckle up!
