TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE
August 23, 2016
LaPlace Woman Killed in Three Vehicle Crash in St. Charles Parish

Destrehan, LAYesterday evening, shortly before 5:00 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B was notified of an injury crash involving a St. Charles Parish Hospital ambulance on US 61 (Airline Hwy) near LA 626. One of the drivers, 62 year old Marva Jackson of LaPlace, LA, later died due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Preliminary investigation revealed that 66 year old Brian Baio of Luling, LA was operating a 2015 Chevrolet G4500 ambulance south on US 61 in the left lane approaching the intersection with LA 626. The ambulance was responding to a call for service and had emergency lights and siren activated. For reasons under investigation, the ambulance drifted into the left turn lane and impacted the right rear bumper of a 2012 Cadillac CTS, driven by Earl Nevills Jr. of LaPlace, LA. As a result of the initial impact, the Cadillac was pushed into the northbound lanes of US 61 and was struck by a 2008 Toyota Rav4 traveling north in the left lane. The Rav4, driven by Marva Jackson, ran off the roadway to the right and caught on fire. Jackson was not wearing a seat belt and was transported to University Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.

Baio and his passenger, 61 year old Angela Champagne of Luling, LA, were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Seat belts were worn by both occupants of the ambulance. Nevills Jr. and his 2 year old juvenile passenger were transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries. Nevills Jr. was wearing a seat belt and the 2 year old was in a child safety seat, but Troopers believe the child seat was improperly installed. A passenger in the Rav4, 40 year old Murphy Jackson III of LaPlace, LA, was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries and was not wearing a seat belt.

Speed is suspected as a factor in the crash on the part of the ambulance. Impairment is not suspected. The crash remains under investigation and criminal charges are pending.

Louisiana law requires that all occupants in the front and rear seats are properly restrained. The primary purpose of a seat belt is to keep the occupant in the seating position preventing ejection. A seat belt also protects the internal organs, brain and spinal cord by spreading the crash forces across the strongest bones in the body and allowing the body to decelerate at a slower rate. By following these few simple steps, you will greatly reduce your chances of injuries in a motor vehicle crash.
