Early Morning Crash Claims the Life of a Port Allen Woman

West Baton Rouge Parish- This morning, Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a fatal crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on US 190 west of LA 1145. The crash claimed the life of a Port Allen woman.

According to investigating troopers, shortly before 2:00 a.m., 36-year-old James Craven of Port Allen, was driving a 1999 Mercury Cougar west on US 190. A pedestrian, 39-year-old Elodia Smith of Port Allen, walked directly into the path of Craven’s vehicle and was stuck.

Craven was not injured in the crash. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by the West Baton Rouge Coroner. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and have been submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind pedestrians state law requires you walk on a sidewalk if provided. If no sidewalk is provided, you must walk against the flow of traffic on the shoulder or as near to the left side of the road as possible. It is also recommended you wear light, or reflective, colored clothing when walking after dark and during times of inclement weather. Should you need to cross the road, you may only do so at intersections and properly marked crosswalks.
