TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE January 15, 2012 Two Killed, One Injured in Iberville Parish Crash Baton Rouge – Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a crash involving a Ranger Polaris 800 UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle) early this morning that left the driver seriously injured and claimed the lives of two passengers. The crash occurred on LA 75 near its intersection with Milly Plantation Road shortly after 3:00 am. Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Matthew Verret (W/M, age 25) of Plaquemine was driving a 2010 Ranger Polaris 800 across LA 75 from the north side to the south side when he missed the driveway he was attempting to enter. The UTV struck the ditch embankment and all three occupants sustained serious injuries. None of the occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Verret was transported to a Baton Rouge hospital, where he remains in serious condition. The two passengers in the UTV, Brooklyn Landry (W/F, age 18) and Brendan Landry (W/M, age 27), both of Plaquemine, succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased by the Iberville Parish Coroner’s Office. Troopers do not suspect impairment to have played a factor in this crash; however, a sample of Verret’s blood has been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. The crash remains under investigation, and charges are pending the outcome of the investigation. Safety precautions should be taken with all motorized vehicles. Most Rangers are equipped with seat belts that work the same as vehicle seat belts. In a vehicle crash, studies show that the safest place to be during a crash is safely restrained inside the vehicle. The same holds true in UTV’s and ATV’s. Also, these vehicles are designed for off-road use. Louisiana law does not allow for three-wheelers, four-wheelers, golf carts, or similar vehicles to be operated on public roadways. Vehicles allowed by law to be operated on public roadways must be registered and inspected. Contact Information: TFC Russell G. Graham II | |||
