Driver Impairment, Lack of Seat Belt Use Suspected Factors in Fatal Crash

White Castle – Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a single-vehicle fatal crash in Iberville Parish last night that claimed the life of an unrestrained driver. The crash occurred on LA 1 south of White Castle shortly after midnight.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Kennie Harrison (B/M, age 28) of St. James was driving a 2007 Chevrolet HHR northbound on LA 1 when he ran off the road to the right. The vehicle entered a deep ditch embankment and struck a culvert. Harrison, who was unrestrained at the time of the crash, sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Iberville Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is suspected to have been a factor in the crash, and Troopers have submitted a sample of Harrison’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis.

Troopers continue to see serious injuries and deaths caused by several common factors. Lack of seat belt use and impaired driving are two of these common factors. In the majority of fatal crashes across Louisiana in 2011, at least one of these factors was present and contributed to the deaths resulting from the crashes. Troopers will continue to promote good decision-making through combined enforcement and education initiatives. The public can also help by making good decisions. Just following a few simple rules can save lives. Never drive while impaired, never get into a vehicle with an impaired driver, never allow some who is impaired to drive, and always wear a seat belt.
