Impairment and Lack of Seat Belt Suspected Factors in Fatal Crash

Ventress – Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle crash early this morning in Pointe Coupee Parish that claimed the life of an unrestrained and suspected impaired driver. The crash occurred on LA 413 south of LA 414 shortly after 2:30 am.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Andrew Mixon (W/M, age 27) of Ventress was driving a 2000 Ford pickup west on LA 413 when he lost control as he entered a right hand curve. The pickup ran off the road to the right and struck two trees before coming to rest against the second tree. Mixon, who was not restrained when the crash occurred, sustained fatal injuries. The Pointe Coupee Coroner’s Office pronounced Mixon deceased on the scene.

Troopers suspect alcohol impairment to have played a factor in this crash and have submitted a sample of Mixon’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

There have been several fatal crashes in the Troop A area this year involving impaired and unrestrained drivers. These two poor decisions lead to tragic deaths and serious injuries throughout the state every year. Wearing a seat belt increases chances of survival and decreases severity of injury in crashes, regardless of the type of crash. State Troopers encourage all drivers to make responsible decisions and help to keep our roadways safe. Troopers also encourage motorists and passengers to play a vital role in highway safety by always buckling up, never driving impaired, and never getting into a vehicle with an impaired driver. Witnesses to impaired or aggressive driving or any hazardous conditions on the roadways can call State Police directly by dialing *577 (*LSP) from a cellular phone.
