Pedestrian Struck and Killed in Pointe Coupee Crash

New Roads – Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a fatal crash on LA 10 near LA 420 in New Roads yesterday evening. The crash, involving a pedestrian, occurred shortly after 7:00 pm.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Jimmy Herring (W/M, age 76) of St. Francisville was driving a 2007 Toyota Yaris east on LA 10 when he entered the intersection with LA 420. At the same time, Herman Weston, Jr. (B/M, age 42) of New Roads walked south across LA 10 in the intersection with LA 420 and was struck by the Toyota.

Troopers do not suspect alcohol to have played a factor in this crash; however, they have submitted blood samples of Herring and Weston to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. No charges have been filed, and the crash remains under investigation.

There have been several fatal pedestrian crashes across Louisiana this year. Most of these crashes occurred at night, and many occurred in dark areas. There are several things pedestrians can do to increase safety and decrease the risk of being struck by a vehicle. It is very important that pedestrians wear light-colored clothing, walk against traffic flow, and cross the road only when it is safe to do so.
