Two Large Loads of Illicit Drugs Discovered During Traffic Stops

West Baton Rouge – Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop A removed over three hundred pounds of marijuana and twelve kilos of cocaine from the streets last week in two separate traffic stops in West Baton Rouge Parish. These were two unrelated traffic stops that lead to the discovery of the illicit drugs and landed three individuals in prison. The estimated street value of the drugs from both arrests exceeds eight hundred thousand dollars ($800,000).

On the afternoon of November 12, 2011, Troopers stopped a 1999 Oldsmobile Aurora, being driven by Christopher Streight (W/M, age 50) of Hayesville, NC, on Interstate 10 in West Baton Rouge Parish for a traffic violation. During the traffic stop, Streight gave Troopers consent to search his vehicle, but rescinded it before the search was complete. An LSP K-9 then alerted to the rear of the vehicle. Troopers opened the trunk and discovered several bales of marijuana, totaling three hundred thirty-three (333) pounds with an estimated street value of $333,000. Troopers arrested Streight and booked him into the West Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of Manufacture/Distribution of Schedule I Drugs, Improper Lane Use, and No Seat Belt. If convicted of the drug charges, Streight faces up to thirty years in prison.

On November 18, 2011 in the early morning, Troopers stopped a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, being driven by Elsa Escobedo(W/F, age 26) of San Antonio, TX, on Interstate 10 in West Baton Rouge Parish for a traffic violation. During the traffic stop, Escobedo gave Troopers consent to search the vehicle. Troopers discovered twelve kilos of cocaine (estimated street value of $500,000) in two hidden compartments in the vehicle. Troopers arrested Escobedo and booked her into the West Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of Manufacture/Distribution of Schedule II Drugs and Driving Left of Center. Troopers also arrested Escobedo’s passenger, Guadeloupe Iglesias (H/M, age 36) of Mexico, and booked him on charges of Manufacture/Distribution of Schedule II Drugs. If convicted, both suspects face up to thirty years in prison.
