TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE August 4, 2012 Pedestrian Struck and Killed on Airline Highway Baton Rouge – Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a fatal crash last night involving a pedestrian in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash occurred shortly after 9:00 p.m. on US 61 near Alco Avenue. Troopers were assisted by East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Deputies with traffic while the crash was being investigated and the roadway cleared. Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that a Toyota 4-Runner was traveling south on Airline Highway in the right lane when the pedestrian, Courtney Rainey (W/F, age 33) of Baton Rouge, stepped into the Toyota’s path. Rainey was transported to a local hospital and later succumbed to her injuries. Troopers did not suspect impairment on the part of the driver (W/F, age 17); however, she voluntarily submitted a breath sample that showed no detectable alcohol in her system. Troopers have submitted a sample of Rainey’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. The crash remains under investigation, and there are no charges pending at this time. A large percentage of pedestrian crashes that have occurred across the state over the past year are attributed to impairment on the part of the driver, the pedestrian, or both. Even a small amount of alcohol in your system will slow reaction time, affect vision, and impair balance. Troopers remind motorists to remain vigilant while driving at all times and pay close attention to pedestrians or cyclists ahead.
