TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE

Suspected Impaired Driver Killed in Interstate 10 Crash

West Baton Rouge – Louisiana State Police investigated a multiple vehicle crash on Interstate 10 yesterday afternoon that resulted in the death of a Florida man. The crash, involving three vehicles, occurred shortly after 5:30 pm on Interstate 10 westbound, west of LA 415.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Clinton Mabry (W/M, age 39) of Gulf Breeze, FL was driving a 1989 Pontiac Grand Am eastbound on Interstate 10 in the westbound inside lane of travel when he struck a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu nearly head on. After the collision, the Pontiac crossed into the westbound outside lane of travel and struck a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe. Mabry was transported to Our Lady of Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Mabry’s passenger and the drivers of the other two vehicles were transported to Baton Rouge General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers suspect alcohol to have been a factor in the crash on the part of Mabry, but were unable to obtain a sample of his blood due to his injuries. Troopers do not suspect either of the other two drivers to have been impaired. Last year, nearly half of the fatal crashes across the state involved driver impairment. Troopers remind motorists of the dangers of drinking and driving and strongly urge people to make good decisions BEFORE getting behind the wheel of a car. Never drive impaired, never get into a vehicle with an impaired driver, and never allow an impaired person to drive. Following these few common-sense rules can mean the difference between life and death.
