TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE April 26, 2012 Unrestrained Driver Killed in Crash, Impairment Suspected Prairieville – Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a single vehicle fatal crash this morning on Interstate 10 eastbound that claimed the life of a young woman. The crash occurred on I-10 near the Bluff Road overpass in Ascension parish shortly after 3:00 am. Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Amanda Walton (W/F, age 20) of Geismar was driving a 2004 GMC Denali east on I-10 when she began traveling towards the median. Walton overcorrected, crossed back over both eastbound lanes, and struck the bridge of a drainage canal. The vehicle then began to roll and Walton, who was not restrained, was ejected. She was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office. Walton’s passenger, Dwyne Guitreau (W/M, age 25) of Greenwell Springs, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Troopers suspect alcohol to have been a factor in this crash and have submitted a sample of Walton’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Troopers strongly urge motorists to have a plan in place before going out. A designated driver is the one who has had NO alcohol. There is never a good reason to get behind the wheel of a vehicle impaired. More than half the fatal crashes that occurred in Louisiana last year involved impaired drivers, unrestrained occupants, or both. The single most effective thing you can do to increase your chances of surviving a violent crash is to buckle up. The primary function of a seatbelt is to prevent ejection and to spread the forces of a crash over a wider part of the body to reduce injuries and fatalities. Making poor decisions when getting behind the wheel of a vehicle has led to tragic outcomes too many times in our state, and Troopers will continue to look to get the people making those poor decisions off our roadways before they have a chance to kill or injure themselves or others.
