TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE

August 7, 2011

Alcohol and Lack of Seat Belt Suspected Factors in Fatal Crash

Springfield – Louisiana State Police Troop A is currently investigating a fatal crash on LA 43 north of Springfield in Livingston Parish. This is the second fatal crash in two days where a suspected impaired driver who was unrestrained has been killed in the Troop A area.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Tanya Adams (W/F, age 35) of Hammond was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe north on LA 43 when she lost control of the vehicle and ran off the roadway to the right. The vehicle became airborne and then rolled over, struck a wood fence, and came to rest on its roof. Adams was partially ejected and sustained fatal injuries. She was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office.

Troopers suspect that driver impairment was a factor in the crash and have submitted a sample of Adams’ blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis.

This weekend in the Troop A area has been a prime example of the dangers of impaired driving and of not being restrained when riding in a vehicle. Troopers investigated two fatal crashes, and both of the drivers killed in the crashes were UNRESTRAINED and suspected to have been IMPAIRED. Impaired driving and lack of seat belt use continue to be common components of fatal crashes throughout the state. Studies have continually shown that decreased instances of impaired driving correlates directly to decreased instances of fatal and serious injury crashes. In addition, studies have shown that increased seat belt use correlates directly to decreased instances of fatal and serious injury crashes. There is NO good excuse to drive impaired, and there is NEVER a good reason to ride in a vehicle without wearing a seat belt.
