Unrestrained Driver Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in Two-Vehicle Crash

Gonzales – Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Donaldsonville man shortly before 7:00 am Wednesday, February 9, 2011 on LA 44 at Black Bayou Road in Ascension Parish. Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Alice Bradley (W/F, age 57) of Prairieville was driving a 1999 Toyota van south on LA 44 when she attempted to make a left turn onto Black Bayou Road. Bradley pulled into the on-coming path of a 2000 Mazda 626, being driven north on LA 44 by Charles Etienne (B/M, age 27) of Donaldsonville. The Toyota struck the Mazda in the right-hand northbound lane of LA 44. The Mazda began to rotate clockwise, ran off the road to the right, struck a utility pole, and came to rest on its roof in a parking lot near the northeast corner of the intersection.

Etienne was unrestrained when the crash occurred and suffered life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, where he remained until this morning. He was pronounced deceased by hospital staff at approximately 8:00 am. Bradley was properly restrained and sustained minor injuries. Charles Etienne’s passenger, Sharla Etienne (B/F, age 22) of Donaldsonville, sustained non life-threatening injuries and was treated at Baton Rouge General Hospital and released the same day. Alcohol is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash. Troopers have charged Bradley with failure to yield while making a left turn and the crash remains under investigation.

This is the third fatal crash that Troopers have worked in Ascension Parish in the past three weeks. In each instance, an occupant who was not properly restrained was killed due to injuries sustained in the crash. The best chance of surviving a violent crash, especially one involving an overturned vehicle, is to be properly restrained. Seat belt use is on the rise throughout the state, but there is still a long way to go before we see full compliance with the seat belt law. Troopers would like to remind everyone who rides in a vehicle to buckle up every time they get into the vehicle. Louisiana law requires ALL occupants, regardless of seating position, to buckle up ANY time they are in a vehicle on a public roadway. Just the few seconds it takes to buckle a seat belt can mean the difference between life and death.

In an effort to continue to increase seat belt use throughout the state, Troopers will continue the practice of combining an aggressive educational program with strict enforcement of the law. Several educational programs provided by Louisiana State Police are available to the public throughout the state. Contact your local Troop PIO to discuss the various programs that State Police has to offer.

BUCKLE UP…SEAT BELTS SAVE LIVES!!!
