Connecticut Man Wanted for Murder Arrested Following Traffic Stop

Port Allen – A Louisiana State Trooper arrested a Connecticut man last night after stopping him for a traffic violation on Interstate 10 in West Baton Rouge Parish. The Trooper, while patrolling Interstate 10 eastbound in West Baton Rouge Parish, stopped a 2003 Honda Accord east of LA 415. The driver, later identified as 36 year-old Benancio Costillo of Connecticut, produced a fraudulent Connecticut driver’s license. Costillo gave the Trooper consent to search the vehicle, and with the assistance of West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Deputies, he discovered 2 kilograms of cocaine hidden under the hood of the car.

As the Trooper attempted to apprehend Costillo, he fled on foot. He fled south from I-10 through a construction yard and then swam across the Intercoastal Canal. Officers from the Addis and Brusly Police Departments caught Costillo in a large open field with the assistance of West Baton Rouge Deputies, Port Allen Police Officers, and the Baton Rouge Police Department Air Support Unit. “This is a prime example of law enforcement partners working together effectively”, said Colonel Mike Edmonson. “The immediate response of multiple agencies working in cooperation is the reason this fugitive was apprehended quickly and safely.”

Upon determining Costillo’s true identity, authorities learned that he was wanted on murder charges in Connecticut. Troopers booked Costillo into the West Baton Rouge Parish Detention Center on charges of possession with intent to distribute Schedule II drugs, flight from an officer, resisting an officer, and improper lane use. He is also being held on the murder charges from Connecticut, pending an extradition hearing.
