Pedestrian Killed on Interstate 10 in Ascension Parish, Troopers Looking for Answers

Baton Rouge – Louisiana State Police Troop A is investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian last night in Ascension Parish on Interstate 10 eastbound near LA 30. The investigation began shortly before midnight when a 2001 Dodge Caravan struck a black male in the right-hand eastbound lane on Interstate 10. Preliminary investigation revealed that the pedestrian was already lying in the right travel lane when he was struck by the van. Troopers believe that he had already been struck by at least one vehicle on Interstate 10 eastbound in the left lane. Troopers continued the crash investigation through the night with the assistance of State Police Detectives, the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office.

The driver of the Caravan, Venus Richmond (W/F, age 48) of Metairie, voluntarily submitted a breath sample to Troopers, which confirmed that she had no detectable alcohol in her system. Mrs. Richmond and her passenger, Gregory Richmond (W/M, 50) of Metairie, were both properly restrained at the time of the crash and neither sustained injuries. They contacted 911 immediately upon coming to a stop on the shoulder of the interstate and cooperated fully with investigating Troopers. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner.

Troopers believe the pedestrian was struck by multiple vehicles, both before and after being struck by the Caravan, and are continuing the investigation. Troopers are also in the process of positively identifying the pedestrian. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Louisiana State Police Troop A at (225) 754-8500.
