Two-Vehicle Crash Claims Life of Port Allen Man West Baton Rouge – Louisiana State Police Troop A is currently investigating a fatal crash that occurred on LA 413 near Rosedale Road in West Baton Rouge Parish shortly after noon today. Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed a 1998 Ford Explorer was traveling south on LA 413 when it crossed the centerline and struck a northbound sugarcane truck. After impact, the Explorer ran off the road to the right and overturned in the ditch along the west edge of the roadway. The sugarcane truck also ran off the road after impact and overturned in the ditch along the east edge of the roadway. The driver of the Explorer, Jonathan Austin (W/M, age 19) of Port Allen, was pronounced deceased on the scene by the West Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office. The driver of the sugarcane truck, Ernest Birks (B/M, age 49) of Maringouin, was transported to Baton Rouge General Hospital with minor injuries. Troopers do not suspect alcohol or drugs to have played a factor in this crash. However, blood samples from both drivers have been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime lab for chemical analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Contact Information: TFC Russell G.
