Troopers Urge Caution and Safety for Halloween

Baton Rouge – Louisiana State Troopers are urging the public to exercise caution and safety this weekend in preparation for Halloween. Most of the Greater Baton Rouge Area will see trick or treat take place on Sunday, October 31 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Some surrounding areas have opted to change trick or treat to Saturday evening. The trick or treat dates and times are listed on “Baton Rouge Today” and can be found on www.batonrougetoday.com. Parents and caregivers should check times for their local areas to ensure the proper trick or treat times. Parents should also be sure to accompany their children during the trick or treat hours. There will be many unrecognizable people and plenty of vehicles on the roads, and the safety of the children is the most important thing to consider. “Public safety is our number one priority.” said Captain Frank Ducote, Troop A Commander. “We will do all we can to ensure that people are able to enjoy themselves while staying safe and doing the right thing.”

Troopers would like to recommend several safety tips to ensure that no unfortunate incidents occur this weekend:

- wear bright or reflective clothing/costumes, avoid dark clothing
- carry a flashlight or glow sticks, each person in the group should do this
- walk on the shoulder facing traffic if necessary to walk on the roadway
- maintain contact with children so they do not run out into traffic
- drive very slowly and carefully, trying to avoid areas of heavy trick-or-treating
- trick-or-treat only in well-lit areas away from busy highways or fast-moving traffic

Parents can also review the Louisiana Sex Offender and Child Predator Registry online if they are concerned of specific areas or homes nearby. The registry can be found online by going to www.lsp.org and clicking on the “Sex Offender Registry” link on top of the main page. Persons found to have committed a sex offense or a crime against a victim who is a minor have a reduced expectation of privacy because of the public's interest in public safety and in the effective operation of government. The mapping and address feature found on the website pinpoints exactly where an offender lives, therefore, educating citizens on which houses to avoid while trick-or-treating. Under current State Law, it is illegal for a registered sex offender to participate in Halloween activities. Notify your local law enforcement agency or Louisiana State Police immediately if you become aware of a sex offender who is attending costume parties, giving out candy, or trick-or-treating,
