Unrestrained Driver Killed in Iberville Parish Crash

Baton Rouge – Louisiana State Police investigated a fatal crash last night on LA 1 at LA 1148 shortly before 7:00 pm. Troopers’ investigation revealed that a 2006 Volvo tractor, pulling a box trailer, was turning left onto LA 1 northbound from LA 1148 as a 1998 Cadillac STS was approaching on LA 1 in the right northbound lane. The Cadillac struck the box trailer and burst into flames. Firefighters from Addis and Plaquemine extinguished the flames quickly, and the Plaquemine Fire Department extricated the driver from the Cadillac.

The driver of the Cadillac, James Hayes (W/M, age 56) of Plaquemine, sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Iberville Parish Coroner’s Office. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Troopers have charged the truck driver, Ralph Domio (B/M, age 45) of Gulfport, with failure to yield from a stop sign and disregarding a traffic control device. Domio by-passed signs indicating a required truck route on LA 1148, which would have put him at a larger intersection with operating traffic signals south of the crash location.

This is the second fatal crash in the Troop A area over the past week. In each instance, the unrestrained driver was killed. Troopers would like to remind motorists to buckle up every time they get into a vehicle. Ensuring that you are properly restrained in the vehicle increases your chances of survival in a crash, especially during a rollover crash. Even in minor collisions, serious injuries can be avoided by wearing a seat belt. State law also requires that every person in the vehicle, regardless of age or seating position, be properly restrained. Also, it is the responsibility of the driver to ensure that children are properly restrained with either a seat belt or a child safety seat appropriate for the child’s age, weight, and height.
