Impairment and Lack of Seat Belt Use Suspected Factors in Early Morning Fatal Crash

Innis – Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a single-vehicle fatal crash shortly before 4:30 this morning on LA 418 north of LA 1 in Pointe Coupee Parish. Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Joseph Edward Adams (W/M, age 26) of Simmesport was driving a 2007 Ford pickup north on LA 418 when he entered a left-hand curve and ran off the road to the right. The pickup rolled several times and Adams, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected. The Pointe Coupee Parish Coroner pronounced Adams deceased on the scene.

Troopers suspect that impairment was a factor in the crash and lack of seat belt use was a factor in Adams’ death. A sample of Adams’ blood has been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. This is the second fatal crash that has occurred in the Troop A area this holiday season. In both cases, alcohol is suspected to have been a factor in the crashes. Captain Frank Ducote, Troop A Commander, said, “Although we have seen fewer serious injuries and deaths caused by drunk drivers and lack of seat belt use this year, we remain committed to a campaign of community outreach, public education, and aggressive enforcement to see this trend continue.” Troop A Troopers saw the last two holiday weekends, Thanksgiving and Labor Day, without a single fatal crash in the Troop A area. Captain Ducote wishes to see this trend continue through the upcoming holiday season. The public is encouraged to help by calling *LSP (*577) from their cellular phones if they see impaired or aggressive drivers on the roadways. They can also help by buckling up every time they get into a vehicle and ensuring that everyone else in the vehicle is buckled up as well.
