| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent Troop A – News Release
Aggressive Driving and Impairment Suspected Factors in Fatal Crash Independence – Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Springfield man last night in Livingston Parish. Troopers’ investigation revealed that Alvin Smith (W/M, age 34) of Springfield was driving a 1989 Plymouth passenger car west on LA 40 at a high rate of speed when he failed to negotiate a left-hand curve. The vehicle ran off the road to the right into the ditch, struck a culvert, became airborne, and struck a utility pole. Smith was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office. The combination of alcohol and drug impairment and speed are suspected to have been factors in the crash. Troopers have submitted a sample of Smith’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. Driving while impaired and aggressive or distracted driving make up the majority of fatal crashes across the nation. There is no excuse for getting behind the wheel impaired, and there is no such thing as “slightly impaired”. Troopers will continue proactive patrol and aggressive DWI enforcement in an effort to keep the motoring public safe. Through this holiday weekend, motorists are urged to be vigilant while driving. With carnival season upon us, there will be additional traffic on the roadways throughout the weekend. Troopers would like to remind motorists to drive safely, never get behind the wheel impaired, and never get into a vehicle with an impaired driver. The public can help to keep the roadways safe by following these simple rules. In addition, they can dial *LSP (*577) from a cell phone to report aggressive or impaired drivers.
