Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE Troopers Arrest Baton Rouge Man Following Lengthy Investigation Baton Rouge – Troopers assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division of Louisiana State Police arrested a Baton Rouge man Tuesday following a lengthy investigation into a complaint of bank fraud and theft. The complaint submitted to State Police from fraud investigators with Regions Bank accused Oliver Edwards Sr. (B/M, age 60) of passing counterfeit checks and defrauding the bank of over $100,000.00. Troopers’ investigation revealed that Edwards had passed several counterfeit checks, totaling $111,491.44, at different Regions Bank branches throughout the Baton Rouge area. Edwards deposited the checks, which inflated the account balance in his checking account, and then withdrew the funds from the account before it was discovered that the checks were counterfeit. Regions Bank made several attempts to receive payments on the funds from Edwards unsuccessfully. Troopers interviewed Edwards at State Police Headquarters Tuesday morning and then placed him under arrest. He was taken to the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and booked on charges of Bank Fraud and Felony Theft. Edwards faces up to ten years imprisonment at hard labor and a fine of up to one hundred thousand dollars if found guilty of bank fraud. Troopers assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division are responsible for the investigation of criminal activity and for intelligence gathering in the State of Louisiana. The division consists of two investigative regions (Region 1 & Region 2) and a statewide Investigative Support Section (ISS). Each investigative region has field offices comprised of Detectives, Narcotics, Special Crimes, and Insurance Fraud / Auto Theft Squads.
