| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE Unrestrained Driver Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash UPDATE: Troopers have identified the deceased driver as Dustan Reine (W/M, age 24) of Maurepas, LA. St. Amant – Louisiana State Police Troop A began an investigation into a single vehicle crash this morning in Ascension Parish on LA 22 west of the Diversion Canal. The crash, which occurred shortly before 2:00 am this morning, claimed the life of the unrestrained driver. Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that a 2002 Dodge pickup was traveling east on LA 22 when it entered a right-hand curve and ran off the roadway to the left. The pickup began to rotate clockwise and struck two trees with its left rear fender. It then began to rotate the opposite direction as it overturned. The pickup rolled several times before coming to rest on the driver’s side, partially submerged in a bayou. The driver (W/M, age 24), who was not restrained when the crash occurred, was ejected and suffered fatal injuries. Troopers suspect impairment to have been a factor in the crash and have submitted a sample of the driver’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. The driver’s name is being withheld pending notification of his family. The overwhelming majority of fatal crashes investigated by Troop A this year have involved impaired drivers and unrestrained occupants. So many deaths and serious injuries could be avoided by simply making better decisions. There is never a good reason to get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you are impaired, and there is never any good excuse for not wearing a seat belt. The public is encouraged to help keep the roadways safe be making good decisions and reporting aggressive and impaired drivers. Never drive a vehicle impaired, never get into a vehicle with an impaired driver, and always wear a seat belt. You can report aggressive or impaired drivers and dangerous roadway conditions by calling *LSP (*577) from a cell phone. | |||
