Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: July 30, 2011 Man Killed in Crash while Riding in Bed of Pick-Up Troop A- Yesterday evening, at approximately 6:40 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a fatal crash on LA 1, just south of LA 69. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2000 Ford F-150, driven by William Lefeaux (W/M, age 57) of Maringouin, LA, was traveling north on LA 1 behind a 1994 Mazda pick-up, driven by Charles Duncan (B/M, age 62) of White Castle, LA. As, the Mazda began to slow to a stop in order to make a left turn onto Mayor Doc Fole Street, the Ford struck the rear of the Mazda ejecting a passenger, Hayward J. McKnight (B/M, age 27) of Plaquemine, LA, from the bed of the Mazda. McKnight was then struck by the Ford and pronounced dead on the scene. All drivers and passengers inside both vehicles were properly restrained with seat belts. Alcohol is not suspected as an influencing factor for Lefeaux, however it is suspected for Duncan. Charges are pending at this time and the investigation is on-going. It is not illegal for people over the age of thirteen to ride in the bed of pick-up trucks, however the chances of surviving a crash are very low. Louisiana law requires every single person that is traveling inside a vehicle to wear a seat belt. Use common sense when getting into a vehicle, and buckle-up to ensure your safety. Also, driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs can result in serious injuries and death. Use a sober driver every time and get home safely. Drivers found to be impaired will face criminal charges.
