Unrestrained Driver Ejected and Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash on Interstate 10 Ramah – Louisiana State Police, Troop A investigated a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 in Iberville Parish today that claimed the life of a Baton Rouge woman. Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Jeanne Leiby (W/F, age 46) of Baton Rouge was driving a 2007 Saturn convertible west on I-10 near milepost 134 when she attempted to merge from the right lane to the left lane. As she moved left, she overcorrected the vehicle and lost control. The vehicle crossed both lanes, struck the right concrete guardrail at a nearly 90-degree angle, and then began to rotate clockwise. Leiby, who was not restrained at the time of the crash, was ejected from the vehicle and struck the roadway as the vehicle continued west on I-10. Troopers worked with West Baton Rouge and Iberville Parish deputies to re-route westbound traffic onto US 190 via LA 415 while the interstate was shut down. The roadway was blocked for nearly three hours while Troopers investigated the crash and crews cleared the scene. Leiby was transported to Baton Rouge General Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries sustained in the crash. Failure to wear a seat belt properly is a contributing factor in many serious injuries and deaths caused by crashes across the country every day. Troop A has investigated twelve fatal crashes so far this year. In eight of these fatal crashes, the person killed was NOT wearing a seat belt. Troopers have also investigated several injury crashes where the person injured was NOT wearing a seat belt. The easiest way to increase the odds of surviving a crash is to wear your seat belt! The easiest way to increase the odds of avoiding serious injuries in a crash is to wear your seat belt! The safest possible place to be during a crash is INSIDE the vehicle, properly restrained.
