Troop A Troopers Investigate Two Fatal Crashes Overnight Baton Rouge – Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated two deadly crashes overnight, one in East Baton Rouge Parish and another in Ascension Parish. The first crash occurred on Interstate 10 shortly before 8:00 pm in East Baton Rouge Parish and the second on LA 73 near LA 74 at approximately 9:45 pm in Ascension Parish. State Police has not released the names of those involved in either crash pending notification of next of kin. A brief synopsis of each crash follows: Shortly before 8:00 pm on Sunday, March 13, Troopers were dispatched to a fatal crash on Interstate 10 eastbound, east of LA 42 in East Baton Rouge Parish. Preliminary investigation revealed that a white pickup truck, headed west on Interstate 10, crossed the median and struck an Acura four-door passenger car head-on in the left eastbound lane. The Acura immediately burst into flames and the five occupants, including at least one small child, were all killed. The driver of the pickup and his passenger both sustained life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital. During the investigation, Troopers learned that two additional vehicles were involved in the crash. A small SUV was involved in a collision with the pickup in the westbound lanes before the pickup crossed the median, and the trailer of an 18-wheeler was struck by the pickup in the eastbound lanes. Troopers are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. At approximately 9:45 pm on Sunday, March 13, Troopers responded to a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on LA 73 near LA 74 in Ascension Parish. Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that a white male was crossing LA 73 when he was struck by a northbound 1995 Dodge Van in the northbound lane. The man was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office. Troopers have submitted samples of the drivers’ blood from the Interstate 10 crash to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. It is unknown at this time if the drivers had any alcohol or drugs in their systems. Troopers have also submitted a sample of the pedestrian’s blood to the crime lab. The woman driving the van on LA 73 voluntarily submitted a breath sample, which showed that she had no detectable alcohol in her system. Both crashes remain under investigation at this time.
