Unrestrained Driver Sustained Life-Threatening Injuries in Pointe Coupee Crash

Lottie, LA – Louisiana State Police, Troop A is currently investigating a two-vehicle injury crash that occurred on US 190 at LA 81 in Lottie, LA at approximately 5:30 pm this evening. Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Kayla Hatch (W/F, age 22) of Lottie was driving a 1994 Chevrolet pickup west on US 190 when she attempted to make a left turn onto LA 81. Hatch turned into the oncoming path of a 2011 GMC SUV, being driven by Kevin Cope (W/M, age 32) of Denham Springs. The GMC struck the front passenger side of the Chevrolet pickup and Hatch, who was not restrained, was ejected from the pickup. After being ejected, she was struck by the pickup as it rolled east on US 190. The GMC ran off the right side of the road after impact, struck the front porch of a local business, and caught fire. Cope was able to escape the vehicle and was treated for minor injuries. Acadian Ambulance Airmed transported Hatch to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Troopers do not suspect alcohol to have played a factor in this crash. However, Troopers have submitted a sample of Hatch’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. Cope voluntarily submitted a breath sample to Troopers, which showed that he had no detectable alcohol in his system.

Failure to wear a seat belt properly is a contributing factor in many serious injuries and deaths caused by crashes across the country every day. Troop A has investigated eleven fatal crashes so far this year. In seven of these fatal crashes, the person killed was NOT wearing a seat belt. Troopers have also investigated several injury crashes where the person injured was NOT wearing a seat belt. The easiest way to increase the odds of surviving a crash is to wear your seat belt! The easiest way to increase the odds of avoiding serious injuries in a crash is to wear your seat belt!
