Weekend Road Rage Incident Leads to Several Criminal Charges and Arrest

Holden – Due to the efforts of an observant citizen, Troop A Troopers responded to a complaint of reckless driving Saturday afternoon on I-12 in Livingston Parish. Troopers received information that at least two vehicles were driving erratically on I-12 eastbound near Holden. The suspected road rage incident quickly turned into an altercation on the shoulder of I-12 involving a gun.

Investigating Troopers learned that Sean Cassidy (W/M, age 18) of Hammond, and Ryan Fitzpatrick (W/M, age 26) of Santa Fe, TX were driving in a reckless and erratic manner. They both threw items out of their vehicles at each other while driving down the interstate. After striking a third vehicle with a water bottle, all three vehicles pulled to the shoulder and the drivers exchanged words. Shortly after Cassidy and Fitzpatrick stopped on the shoulder, Cassidy's father, Ralph Brown (W/M, age 68) of Hammond, travelled onto I-12, driving the wrong way up the shoulder from the Albany exit ramp. Brown exited his vehicle with a gun, engaged in an altercation with the driver of the third vehicle, and committed a battery on him. During the altercation, Brown’s wife took the weapon and returned it to the vehicle.

Troopers arrested Brown and booked him into the Livingston Parish Prison on criminal charges of reckless operation of a vehicle and simple battery. Troopers are continuing their investigation and additional charges are possible.

Troopers issued misdemeanor summonses to Cassidy and Fitzpatrick for reckless operation and littering.

“Driving aggressively and becoming involved in a ‘road rage’ incident shows a blatant disregard for the safety of others on the roadway. State Police will simply not tolerate it,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. “Just three weeks ago, Troopers arrested and booked two drivers on charges of reckless operation, negligent homicide, and vehicular homicide because their dangerous actions on Interstate 10 are suspected in the deaths of five innocent people, including three children.”
