Troopers were called to the scene of the hit and run this morning on US 61 south of LA 73, where they immediately began working with deputies and following leads. Preliminary investigation revealed that a white Mazda was traveling south on US 61 south of LA 73 when it struck Willie Daniels (B/M, age 44) of Gonzales. Daniels was pronounced deceased by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office on the scene. Crime Scene Unit personnel from the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab processed the scene and collected physical evidence. Troopers and Deputies were able to determine that there was damage to the Mazda, including a missing driver’s side mirror, shattered driver’s side window, and damage to the left front area of the vehicle. They followed leads throughout the day and later learned that the vehicle involved in the crash was a 2011 Mazda 3. Further investigation revealed that Joni Cooley (W/F, age 34) of Prairieville was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. Troopers arrested Cooley and booked her into the Ascension Parish Prison, where she is charged with felony hit and run. The vehicle has been taken to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for processing.
