Unrestrained Driver Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash

Walker – Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Livingston man Friday, April 29 shortly before 8:30 pm on LA 1024 (Cane Market Road) east of LA 447 (Walker North Road). Troopers’ investigation revealed that Sterling Higginbotham (W/M, age 65) of Livingston was driving a 1999 Acura west on LA 1024 when he rear-ended a 2002 Chevrolet Pickup that was pulling a gooseneck trailer loaded with a backhoe. Henry Williams (W/M, age 43) of Livingston, the driver of the pickup, had slowed to turn left into a parking lot when Higginbotham rear-ended him.

Higginbotham was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred and was fatally injured. The Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced him deceased on the scene. Williams, who was properly restrained when the crash occurred, was not injured. Troopers do not suspect alcohol to have played a factor in this crash. Williams voluntarily submitted a breath sample that showed he had no detectable alcohol in his system. Troopers submitted a sample of Higginbotham’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis.

Nationwide studies show that the best chances of surviving a vehicle crash and avoiding serious injury is by wearing a seat belt. Thousands of people are seriously injured and killed every day across the country because they are not properly restrained when involved in a crash. State law requires that everyone in a vehicle buckle up, regardless of age or seating position. While the rate of seat belt use in Louisiana is higher than it has ever been, Troopers are still issuing seat belt citations on a daily basis. We will continue to enforce the state’s seat belt laws and promote seat belt use through outreach and educational programs across the state in an effort to continue to reduce the amount of fatalities and serious injuries caused by vehicle crashes.

BUCKLE UP…SEAT BELTS SAVE LIVES!!!
