Unrestrained Driver Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash

Port Vincent – Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a two-vehicle crash yesterday that claimed the life of an unrestrained Denham Springs woman. The head-on collision occurred on LA 16 north of LA 1032 shortly after 4:00 pm.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that London Jackson (W/F, age 27) of Denham Springs was driving a 2010 Hyundai Accent south on LA 16 when she entered a right-hand curve and crossed the center-line into the oncoming path of a 2007 GMC pickup. The Hyundai struck the pickup almost head on in the northbound lane. Jackson was not restrained when the crash occurred and sustained fatal injuries. She was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office. The driver of the pickup, Paul Scardina (W/M, age 34) of Denham Springs, was properly restrained and uninjured in the crash. Jackson’s passenger, a 3-year-old toddler, was properly restrained in the rear center seat in an appropriate child safety seat. The toddler sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital by Acadian Ambulance.

Troopers do not suspect alcohol to have played a factor in the crash. However, a sample of Jackson’s blood has been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. Scardina submitted a breath sample to Troopers that showed he had no detectable alcohol in his system.

This is the seventeenth fatal crash investigated by Troop A this year. In thirteen of the seventeen crashes, the person killed in the crash was NOT properly restrained. The safest place to be during a crash is INSIDE the vehicle, and the only way to ensure this is to be properly restrained. Seat belts not only keep occupants from being ejected, but also keep those occupants from suffering violent collisions inside the vehicle. Louisiana State Police will continue to promote seat belt use through education and enforcement in an effort to continue to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes throughout the state.
