Geismar Woman Killed in Ascension Parish Fatal Crash

Geismar Shortly after 3:30 pm on September 19, 2013, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 75 at LA Hwy 3251 (Ashland Rd.) in Ascension Parish. The crash took the life of 87 year old Geismar resident Lonie H. Marchand.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Marchand was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu westbound on Ashland Rd. At the same time, 43 year old Karl Bell of Baton Rouge was driving a 1994 Mack dump truck northbound on LA 75. Marchand came to the stop sign at the intersection of Ashland Rd. and LA 75 and was preparing to turn left to travel southbound on LA 75. After stopping, she pulled out onto LA 75 directly into the path of the Mack dump truck. Bell’s Mack truck struck the driver’s side of the Malibu.

Despite the fact that she was wearing a seatbelt, Marchand suffered fatal injuries from the crash. Bell was properly restrained and was uninjured in the crash. Impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash on the part of either driver.

Troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving at all times. Never drive a motor vehicle when impaired or fatigued. Always remain buckled up while in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, and make sure that all children are properly restrained. Avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road, and always obey all traffic control devices.
