Unrestrained Mississippi Man Killed in Pointe Coupee Parish Fatal Crash

New Roads Shortly after 6:00 am on October 19, 2013, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash involving a cane truck that occurred on LA Hwy 1 north of LA Hwy 3131 (Hospital Rd.) in Pointe Coupee Parish. The crash took the life of 73 year old Robert Sims, Sr. of Woodville, MS.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Sims was driving a 1989 International tractor-trailer southbound on LA Hwy 1. For unknown reasons the International ran off the roadway to the right and entered into a ditch. Upon entering the ditch, the International began to overturn and struck a culvert before coming to rest on its side.

Troopers initially believed that Sims suffered a medical condition prior to the crash. However, further investigation and an autopsy revealed that Sims was unrestrained and suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. A toxicology sample was taken from Sims and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
