Double School Bus Crash Sends Numerous Children to Hospital

Port Allen – Shortly after 3:00 pm on November 1, 2013, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating an injury crash involving two school buses that occurred on LA Hwy 415 south of LA Hwy 620 (Section Rd.) in West Baton Rouge Parish.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 77 year old Port Allen resident Richard N. Lee, Jr. was driving a 2006 IC school bus southbound on LA 415. At the same time, 36 year old Renita Trufant of Baton Rouge was driving a second 2006 IC school bus southbound on LA 415. Trufant came to a stop on LA 415 south of LA 620, and had the warning lights of her school bus engaged. For unknown reasons Lee failed to stop his school bus, and rear-ended the bus driven by Trufant causing minor damage.

Twenty-one children (ranging from elementary school to middle school age) were transported from the scene to local hospitals with very minor injuries. Air-Med transported several children due only to the fact that there were no more ambulances available for ground transportation. Both Lee and Trufant suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash. Driver impairment on the part of either driver is not suspected; however, Lee was cited for careless operation.

Troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving at all times. Never drive a motor vehicle when impaired or fatigued. Always remain buckled up while in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, and make sure that all children are properly restrained. Avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road, and always obey all traffic control devices.
