The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 46 year old St. James resident Elaine Lewis was driving a 2003 Ford Taurus westbound on LA Hwy 70. At the same time, Davis was driving a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta eastbound on LA Hwy 70. For unknown reasons Lewis’ Taurus crossed the centerline and struck the Jetta head on.

Despite the fact that Davis was properly restrained, she was airlifted to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge where she succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Lewis was also properly restrained and suffered serious injuries from the crash. Impairment on the part of either driver is not suspected; however, toxicology samples were taken from both drivers and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every occupant in a vehicle to be properly restrained at all times. This is the time of year when Troopers usually see a significant increase in serious injury and fatal crashes. With the holiday season upon us, Louisiana State Police would like to remind motorists to be extra cautious when driving on our roadways. Louisiana State Troopers will be on the roadways throughout this holiday season aggressively enforcing the state’s laws in an effort to keep everyone safe.
